A Review: Savorez Lives Up To Its Name

This past Spring I spent a weekend in the Wrightsville Beach/Wilmington area for a Moms’ Getaway Weekend.

Eight women hanging out means a lot of fun, laughs and food. It also means finding places where our group of carnivores, vegetarians and vegans can indulge. With all dietary needs in mind we decided to make Savorez our first stop.

Our group showed up on Friday evening with no reservation. Just a prayer that they would have mercy on us and not make us wait too long. Luckily it worked out and we were seated in about 30 minutes.

Okay, let me tell you. There is a reason Savorez has great reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor. The name means “flavor” and it is absolutely that. The menu is Latin inspired, with great use of local ingredients. This also means the menu can change depending on the season.

I ordered the jerk chicken because I rarely turn down a chance to eat jerk chicken, especially when it’s served with coconut rice AND pineapple salsa!

I should have taken a picture of my plate when I was finished, but take my word for it. I ate every drop. Every. Drop.

Next up was dessert. We decided to order at least one of everything on the menu to share. In theory this was a good idea. In reality I wanted my own fruit creme brûlée. That’s it pictured at the beginning of this post, and yes, it tasted as good as, if not better than it looks! See that dollop? It is a hibiscus cream, :-).

I wanted to go back on Saturday just for dessert.

The sweet potato cheesecake empanadas pictured below also made it on my favorite list.

The plate was drizzled with hibiscus caramel and the empanadas were topped with pineapple chutney and candied pecans. It would be hard to mess up that combination.

And not far behind was the drunken pineapple dessert.

The pineapples had a rum glaze, was roasted and served with coconut ice cream.

We all left happy, full and ready for a night of talking, laughing and sleeping.

Yes, sleeping. Because we’re moms and a getaway means being able to sleep as much as we want, :-).
